Debanjan Roychoudhury

Dr. Debanjan Roychoudhury is an Adjunct Assistant Professor in the Department of Sociology, where he teaches the Theory and Methodology course for the Quantitative Methods in the Social Sciences (QMSS) program. He also works as an adjunct faculty member in the Urban Data Science program for the Center for Urban Science + Progress at New York University Tandon School of Engineering. His research focuses on using geospatial data science to explore the interaction and interplay between collective behavior and social institutions. He has written and researched extensively on the expansion of modern American policing and the carceral state as a political and discursive project and its effects on populations at the neighborhood level. Dr. Roychoudhury was previously a Mellon Foundation Postdoctoral Associate in the Prison Education Program of the Faculty of Arts and Science at New York University. He was awarded the Public Interest Technology-University Network (PIT-UN) Tech for Change Hackathon Grant by New America to organize the "Urban Informatics for Safe, Just, and Thriving Communities" Hackathon. Dr. Roychoudhury received his Ph. D. in sociology from University of California, Los Angeles and his B.A. in sociology from Middlebury College, where he was a proud Posse Foundation scholar.
